Record price for Arthur Boyd painting

A painting by renowned Australian artist Arthur Boyd went under the hammer for $1.4 million at an auction in Melbourne last night, setting a record price for his work.

Bride Running Away sold for a total of $1,680,000, including buyer's premium, at the Sotheby's auction. Sotheby's senior executive John Keats said it was the most anyone had ever paid at auction for a work by Boyd.

The painting, from Boyd's acclaimed bride series, was expected to sell for between $1.4 million and $1.6 million.

The 1957 painting had been in the same collection for more than 40 years and was rarely exhibited.

The Boyd record was held by two paintings sold at the same auction house: Frightened Bridegroom (1958) made $1.2 million including buyer's premium last August, and Dry Creek Bed, Alice Springs (1953-54) fetched the same price in May.
